Since 2009, Anja Manuel has served as a founding partner and principal at RiceHadleyGates, LLC, a strategic consulting firm, which she co-founded along with former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Stephen Hadley, and Robert Gates. The firm works with senior executives of major companies to evaluate strategic and political risk, and expand in emerging markets.
Anja is the author of the critically-acclaimed book, This Brave New World: India, China and the United States, which was published by Simon and Schuster in 2016. Her book draws on two decades of experience in business, law, and government to take the audience on an intimate tour of the corridors of power and the lowly slums of Asia. She has traveled extensively across Asia and the world, independently and with her clients, and regularly experiences tough negotiators and managing unruly subsidiaries in cities from Beijing to Bangalore to Bogota.
From 2005 to 2007, she served as an official at the US Department of State, and was responsible for South Asia Policy. Her front row view of the colossal shift in power to China—and India in particular—makes her a significant voice on globalization and how to manage it today. Earlier in her career, Anja also served as an attorney working on international and US Supreme Court cases, and as an investment banker at Salomon Brothers in London. A graduate of Harvard Law School and Stanford University, Manuel now also lectures at Stanford University.
Providing audiences a candid look at the rise of emerging markets, she is a frequent commentator on foreign policy and technology, for TV and radio outlets such as the BBC, Fox Business, MSNBC, and NPR, etc., and she frequently writes for major news publications ranging from the New York Times, to Fortune magazine, The Atlantic, and Reuters, among others.
She serves on several corporate and non-profit boards, including the boards of Overseas Shipping Group, Inc. (NYSE listed), Ripple Labs Inc., a leading blockchain payments company, and advisory boards of Flexport Inc., Synapse Inc., Center for a New American Security, the American Ditchley Foundation, and Governor Brown’s California Export Council.
Anja is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Aspen Strategy Group for South Asia, and lives in San Francisco, California with her husband and two small children.
